HOW does one describe the newly opened Satang Thai? It's fast fresh and friendly - and although that makes it sound a bit like your local fruit shop, it's definitely much more hip :D
Satang Thai is a bright restaurant down Quay St, Haymarket that has only been open for a little under a fortnight so it's crazy how popular it is! The kitchen gleams silver and energetic black waiters hop around busily from table to tableGrand opening on the 7th May (don't check the date on this post D:)
Across the road is its predecessor restrantau, Satang Thai Number 1, a tiny but well-loved hole-in-the-wall specialising in chop-chop takeawaysWe walked in half-excited about the possibility of grand opening specials, and got even more excited when our waitress confirmed rumours that all dishes were $5.00
We ended up ordering six generous stirfry dishes between three people rofl! Luckily, I was with the always-hungry pieface and big M so there were no major objections to this ;DD
A list of what we ordered, in order of how awesome they turned out to be:
1. Pad Thai w/ Seafood (1000% definitely recommended)
2. Cashew Nut Chicken Rice (mm there may be bias here because I love cashew nut stirfries)
3. Stewed Pork Leg Rice
4. Duck Pad Phed
5. Morning Glory veg (yum but not so interesting)
6. Squid with salty egg
Everything was five bucks for us (HEHE) but normal prices are listed below.Chef's Suggestion - Duck Pad Phed $13.50
The roast duck strips were juicy & very tasty, they came tossed with red curry spices, crunchy capsicum, green beans and basil. This was a good dish, lovely red curry sauce, but be careful of the peppercorn garnishes, unless you like the idea of mini explosives going off in your mouthThe second Chef's Suggestion we ordered - Squid Kai Khem $13.50
THIS was a bizarre dish. Stir-fried squid, yes I understand, but everything came coated in a thin layer of sandy, salty yellow stuff... think egg yolk transformed into a sauce.
I tried to stick to the shallots and celery bits because they looked safer than the squid, but even then the yellow egg sauce was overpowering! Chef's suggestion it may be but I say stay awayy from this dish haha I left it to the others to finish.......... thanks guys :DKhao Kha Moo (spiced stewed pork and pickled veg) $9
This dish had a mixed reception. I thought it was lovely! IMHO, the pork pieces were cooked until moist and tender, and went together well with the tangy pickled cabbage to the side. On the other hand Pieface and big M found it too soupy. WHAT, too soupy! It is supposed to be soupy! We often have a similar Chinese version at home so trust me when I say it is supposed to be soupy
Hahaha
The best thing about khoo kha moo is the way the rice bed soaks up both the fragrant Chinese spices from the pork leg stew and the slightly sweet pickling vinegar. Chilli dip was sharp with garlic and fairly hot... hehe nothing like the wanky, no-fire, sweet chilli stuff that I loveCashew nut chicken $12.50
Oh god, cashew chicken stirfry. Or really, cashews stir-fried with anything. Choose from chicken/beef/pork, tossed with tangy tomato, garlic, cashews and assorted veggies. I usually prefer the chicken pieces cut more finely but this was still crunchy, tasty joy :D"Stir-fried Morning Glory with fresh chilli and garlic"
We ordered the Boong Dang ($8.50) to find out what "Morning Glory" was (apart from a stationery shop selling pens and fluffy phone charms). It ended up being water spinach, or 'kong sin cai' in Chinese. Classic veggie stirfry, not much to say! Aha I tried to steer clear of the enormous chilli wedgesPad Thai with seafood $10.50
The absolute favourite of the day
Long rice noodles were thick with the glorious pad thai sauce, which was both sweet and tangy once we'd squeezed on the lemon juice. Order the seafood to receive big plump prawns chucked over the top - mix them up with the crushed peanuts, fresh beansprouts and chives and enjoy. Try not to lick the plate :D
Eating with friends rocks
Grand openings rock

I tried to sneakily check out what they were eating... because as waiters they probably know what's good! but couldn't do it without being too obvious haha
