Who loves durian?
You love durian, I love durian.
WE ALL LOVE DURIAN!
Iced Durian Dessert at Cafe Joy, Sydney, $6.00
There are a string of interesting eateries on the road down from the bus stop to Haymarket campus. There's the place with grapes stuck all over the ceiling, the bun shop that nobody knows about, a Thai restaurant that always has policemen sitting inside slurping noodles, and then there's Cafe Joy.
Cafe Joy is the only eatery in Sydney (that I know of) that sells real iced durian. I have a vague idea that they also have a menu of normal Malaysian-Singaporean meals (char kuay teow noodles, laksa, etc) but these details PALE in comparison to the wonder of iced durian in Sydney.
The day we finally found time to go and have our durian dessert, it was disgustingly, blisteringly hot. The good thing is it made eating our sweet, velvety, crunchy (ice), pungently aromatic iced durian one of the most wonderful experiences in the world.
The best thing about this dessert is that it's literally just shaved ice and durian. Pick up a spoonful and it's pure durian at its best - deliciously cold and sweet, interrupted only by the crunch of ice.
The price is also pretty decent, considering durian is expensive in Sydney, with one fruit generally priced at $4/kg.... so one big Thailand durian will set you back around $15. Only Thai durians are sold in Sydney's asian grocery shops. I have yet to try an authentic Malaysian durian because they're not fleshy enough for our importers to bring here, but my dad assures me they would blow me away.
